Position Title:                           Head Sailing Instructor

Location:                                 Skaneateles Country Club

Reports To:                              Learn-to-Sail Program Director

 

Position Summary:  Under general supervision, organize, lead and grow a highly regarded Learn-To-Sail program. Create and develop lifelong sailors utilizing a dual track: recreational and racing.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Sail Instruction

o   Provide on and off the water instruction.

o   Managing all the resources needed to run Junior and Adult learn-to-sail programs

§  Be there for all Sailing Instruction sessions and events.  Meet the students and parents, know their names.

§  Maintain student attendance and student progress reports

§  Manage Staff of Instructors: assigning work/classes, reviewing lesson plans

§  Coordinate adult volunteers

§  Develop daily lesson plans in support of the Program Outline jointly developed with the Sailing Committee

§  Develop “Rainy Day” plans: lessons, activities, games, etc.

o   Perform short, weekly assessments of staff performance and adherence to job duties.

o   Oversee student progress and tracking, go over lesson plans and progress charts with staff.

o   Work with Director in planning and effectively executing all events on SCC Sailing Program calendar and assign jobs to staff as needed.

o   Function as point of contact when Director is unavailable; assist Parent Representative when away.

o   Greet parents in a pleasant and professional manner EVERYDAY during drop-off and pick-up.

o   Work closely with all staff to ensure all procedures and policies of SCC Sailing Program and Skaneateles Country Club are followed and observed to facilitate a safe, fun, and effective sailing program at Skaneateles Country Club.

o   Work with all staff to ensure daily opening and closing tasks are being performed and completed correctly.

·         Racing Program

o   Oversee and assist Race Coordinator at home and away.

o   Organize travel for interclub events and Junior Olympics, organize adult volunteers

o   Organize and manage SCC hosted interclub events

o   Encourage and facilitate student participation in Skaneateles Lake based Regattas to include Lightning One Day, Sandbagger Series, All Lake Regatta, etc. 

·         Safety

o   Check availability and condition of safety equipment, radios and first aid equipment daily

o   Be engaged and aware of weather conditions and on-the-water conditions, taking appropriate action to ensure a safe learning environment.

o   Communicate and enforce all Club directed health and safety protocols to include COVID-19

·         Equipment and Facilities

o   Maintain open, productive, and continuous communication with staff concerning boat maintenance, needs, rules, issues, questions, and concerns and bring them to the attention of the Director promptly.

o   Assign opening and closing tasks to staff members and ensure tasks are completed EVERYDAY. (Foc’sle, instructors work room, all boats, grounds surrounding Sailing Program buildings)

o   Enlist students to help determine issues

o   Assign and manage sail and motorboat maintenance that cannot be easily address by Instructors with Harbor Master

o   Work on special projects as assigned requirements for the position.

o   Maximize parental and volunteer involvement, mobilize parental support of their kids.

Qualifications

o   High School diploma

o   US Sailing certifications: Small Boat Level 1 and Safe Sport

o   Current American Heart Association CPR certification

o   NYS Safe Boating Certificate

Working Conditions:

o   Full time position that will include some evenings and weekends

o   Stand, sit, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, bend and kneel for up to 5 hours at a time

o   Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

·         Program Development

o   Develop Junior and Adult Learn-To-Sail Program Outlines, class descriptions and curriculums, jointly with Club Manager and Sailing Committee

o   Create and manage a Learn-To-Sail Program budget, including setting tuition prices

o   Continually review and evaluate the program by communication with staff, participants, and parents.

o   Actively recruit students (adult and juniors), working with Club Day Camp program to introduce campers to sailing.

o   Prepare promotion and advertising materials

·         Sail Instruction

o   Managing all the resources needed to run Junior and Adult learn-to-sail programs

§  Be there for all Sailing Instruction sessions and events.  Meet the students and parents, know their names.

§  Maintain student attendance and student progress reports

§  Manage Staff of Instructors: assigning work/classes, reviewing lesson plans

§  Coordinate adult volunteers

§  Develop daily lesson plans under the guidelines of the US Sailing “Red Book” and in support of the Program Outline jointly developed with the Sailing Committee

§  Develop “Rainy Day” plans: lessons, activities, games, etc.

·         Racing Program

o   Organize travel for interclub events and Junior Olympics, organize adult volunteers

o   Organize and manage SCC hosted interclub events

o   Encourage and facilitate student participation in Skaneateles Lake based Regattas to include Lightning One Day, Sandbagger Series, All Lake Regatta, etc. 

o   Coordinate trophies and end of year banquet.

·         Safety

o   Check availability and condition of safety equipment, radios and first aid equipment daily

o   Be engaged and aware of weather conditions and on-the-water conditions, taking appropriate action to ensure a safe learning environment.

o   Communicate and enforce all Club directed health and safety protocols to include COVID-19

·         Instructor Development

o   Recruit Junior Instructor in Training (JITS) from student base

o   Recruit Senior Instructors as needed

o   Prepare written development plans for each Instructor and JIT

§  Provide training and development opportunities

§  Provide frequent verbal feedback and written evaluation

o   Provide Training on:

§  Club protocols for motorboat use, check lists, life jacket use and Emergency Response Plan

§  Race Committee and the Rules of Sailing

·         Equipment and Facilities

o   Maintain a maintenance and condition check list for each sail and motorboat.  Daily evaluation of all sail and power boats condition and suitability for its purpose.

o   Enlist students to help determine issues

o   Coordinate sail and motorboat maintenance that cannot be easily address by Instructors, with Harbor Master

o   Keep equipment, grounds, docks and Foc’sel ship shape, notifying Management of any issues.

o   Ultimately, make sure everything is in working order

o   Attend Club Staff and CNY Junior Sailing meetings as required.

o   Work on special projects as assigned requirements for the position.

o   Maximize parental and volunteer involvement, mobilize parental support of their kids.
